Poise & confidence did not always come easy to me.
I walked into a formal lunch with a close friend and her family. I remember vividly pretending to know what I was doing, by watching everyone else. In actuality, I was nervous a wreck inside. I sheepishly asked, “Why would they give me, a spoon with pasta? “ Being quite unsure of how to navigate this situation, I proceeded to clumsily twirl my fork in the pasta….
It was at that precise moment that my friend’s mother gently informed about the purpose of the spoon and showed me how to use it. YIKES… I was extremely embarrassed by my naivety. My friend’s family seemed refined and I remember thinking, “Why don’t I know this stuff?
…We dined out every day during my visit and I learned to better my etiquette skills through trial and error.
Over time I recognized the importance
of confidence, social courtesies and professionalism. Etiquette is really about showing respect and consideration for others. This event amongst others inspired me not only to become more refined but to help others do the same!
